A New Era for Philippine Football

This will mark as one of my favorite front page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

In a country full of boxing and basketball freaks, football may be considered as a sport by the chosen few.

Though considered as the world’s most popular sport, football is not that popular here in the Land of Juan. Come on! With Filipinos who love action-packed sports, a game like football - with almost 2 hours and without a score - is a big no no.

But with this recent victory, it seems like this would be a beginning of a new era for Philippine football.

Long considered one of the weakest teams in Southeast Asia, the Filipinos achieved the improbable Sunday night when they shut out defending champion Vietnamese, 2-0, in the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup at the My Dinh Stadium here…

A 1-0 victory is a hard feat. A 2-0 victory is insane! Especially that they defeated the defending champion.

…It was only the second win by the Filipinos in this tournament, after a 2-1 victory over Timor Leste in the 2004 tournament.

We Filipinos (I am talking about native Filipinos and not half-bred Filipinos), with our small physique and fast speed, should focus more on football than basketball. Let’s just leave basketball to the Caucasians and enjoy their show.

I hope that this recent victory will add up to the football awareness of the kids in the barrio. I also call for the support of the government and NGOs on this sport.

Who knows? Some kids out there might be the next Phil Younghusband or David Beckham.

Or it maybe it’s me.

I used to play football back in College.

Or not.

Everybody buy this book! My bestfriend Blanca has this book. I borrowed it and finished reading it in one night.

Ang Alamat ng Panget is the only book that can make “ugly +corny + doesn’t make sense = best book ever” possible.
